The Catholic Mutual Relief Society of America (CMRS) has been in existence since 1889, providing property and casualty protection exclusively to Catholic Church properties. CMRS is not, however, an insurance company. It is a non-profit, self-insurance fund of the Catholic Church. CMRS operates in 49 of the 50 states in the U. S., and in the District of Columbia and the U. S. Virgin Islands, and is the largest provider of coverage to dioceses in the United States. It has no stockholders and no profit motive. It is controlled by a Board of Trustees who are members of the Episcopal hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The only entities eligible to participate in the self-insurance program are entities of the Catholic Church. For over the past hundred years, CMRS has protected clergy and church properties through the church’s own self-insurance fund. CMRS services are not available to laity or to secular organizations.
